EPL Talk: Steve McClaren Drops Beckham from England Squad

I agree with most of your comments. I don't know if the Ashton addition will make that much of a difference in the near, or long term; however, what it does signal is that he is open to bringing new blood into the squad

Well I have to admit, Im somewhat sad about the fact that Beckhams time with England is coming to an end. Despite the fact that its so fashionable to hate him, I think he was one of few positives from the world cup. I will admit though that McClaren is building a squad to win euro 08...not international friendlies today. In leauge play, you cant afford to 're-stock'...but when your season is every two years, you have to make tough decisions about the squad.

I think it was time to drop Becks. I don't hate Becks, but it's time to bring in Lennon & the other youngsters who could do a better job. These are the guys who will play in Euro '08 and WC '10, so it's good to get them playing together early.

Gerrard would've been a better skipper as he's fantastic at motivating his teammates and changing games single-handedly, but at least he won't have to put up with the press when things don't go well under McClaren. Good luck to Terry & life under the microscope.

Gerrard does nothing for england on a passionate side, if he did it like he was at liverpool then hed be captain. Nuff said

as a liverpool supported I'm pleased that gerrard hasn't been chosen as cap'n.

I've been an Ashton fan since his first stint in the Premiership with Norwich. I think he's already a quality player with the potential to be even better with more experience at the elite levels. Hopefully he gets a full shot and not just a one or two game cameo.

Say what you want about Beckham (and I'm sure everyone will) but the fact remains that he turned out to be the only true goal scoring threat for England in Germany. Hopefully Lampard will find the broadside of a barn to practice shooting at before they need him to contribute in a meaningful match again.
