It was soft penalty at best but Liverpool deserved to win the tie without the penalty call. One can only hope that this latest installment of Liverpool v Chelski will not be yet another snoozefest.

That is bull. Not only was it a soft foul that should of been given if at all outside of the box or definitely not at all, but Arsenal would have gone on to win for sure. The final babel goal comment above is a complete farce. Babel would have never gotten that goal had Arsenal not been stolen the game from the ref. All Arsenal could do was bring the entire side forward in hopes of scoring.

As an Arsenal fan I am devastated, the penalty decision hurts. The league is going to be a miracle at this point, but maybe this will convince Arsene that he needs to spend some money to add some depth and play Walcott.

What bothers me the most about it, is that Gerrard was pants for that entire match but gets to walk off the hero for getting the winning penalty.
Every time he got the ball he would run forward and recklessly wing it across the field to a waiting Arsenal player.

Football fans will undoubtedly be discussing whether the foul on Babel should have been a penalty or not for days, if not weeks. Even if the referee had not awarded a penalty, Babel’s goal was enough for Liverpool to win the game. Dude, if it wasn't for that penalty Arsenal wouldn't have attacked so much and Babel wouldn't get that much of a space.Liverpool were very lucky, you have to admit that and the refrees suck, 3 decisions in 3 games regarding penalties in their favour.

Damn that Mascherano, all he did was kick people around and then do his innocent droopy eyed retard act so he can escape punishment from the referee. Liverpool only started dominating after Flamini limped off the pitch. I feel sorry for Walcott, this night is not going to be remembered for his great display but for that joke of a penalty

liverpool fans are just pathetic i'd like to see the chelsea match against them. The second leg will be at Stamford Bridge, face it liverpool, the only reason why you have been considered 'European Giants' is because of the luck of the draw where you have always had the advantage of playing the second leg at home. You also had plenty of luck last night as you got a penalty decision after you got away with one last week, liverpool only have heart and that is mainly down to Stevie Gerrard, Arsenal are better on the ball, younger and faster...we simply outplayed you. Walcott should now be christened the new Henry, he took out at least five of your players and it was so funny to see mascherano fall into the dust he left behind. I feel especially sorry for him because he should have won Arsenal the match and take all the headlines instead of Ryan Babel who did not show half the ability as he did diving and then facing the simple task of outpacing a tired soldier called Fabregas. Okay. Not a Liverpool supporter or an Arsenal supporter, in fact i'm a Leeds United supporter. The reason why Liverpool are "european giants" is clear, look at final appearances and number of wins in this competition.... penalty was soft in the context over two legs. I have yet to see a convincing angle which says it is clear penalty unlike the Hleb incident but that is the way it goes sometimes. I have tipped the irony of much maligned Avram Grant to win the league and UCL (this beating Liverpool which they have failed to do under Mourinho in UCL).... and if they do it will hurt but not as much as the Mancs getting it done......

Did this guy watch the match "The ref made the correct decision and Gerrard slotted the ball home in a see-saw of a match." I've seen more harsh challenges not given..Toure made very little contact...if anythin the incident in the 1st leg was a penalty

Actually Crucial Desisions did cost Arsenal the tie, you really cant argue that. A clear penalty not called in one game, a very soft penalty called in the next... Game over. They were very level teams in all 3 matches and either teams deserved to win really... and it ended up being 2 Crucial desisions that did in fact dictate who advanced. That's football sometimes, as much as it hurts

You can complain about referee decisions all you want, but all that does is deflect attention from larger problems at Arsenal, such as despite having an excellent team there is some dead weight that needs cutting from it. Arsenal were in the market for Torres and Babel but passed on them for being overvalued - and guess what, they end up at Liverpool, scoring in the quarter final.
Also Rafa/Liverpool seem to have that European magic touch while Wenger/Arsenal patently do not.
If you want to get all micro about it you could argue that losing Sagna or losing Flamini cost Arsenal the tie. Or that preventing Gerrard from skinning his man and supplying the cross that created the crucial away goal in the first leg was the #1 crucial moment.
Penalties get the headlines but they do not tell the whole story.

What on earth have you let your site become? You always had done an outstanding job of presenting opinion and views about the Premier League but now leave your writing to a 19 year who knows less about football than my pet ferret. I am not much for the Americanizing of the opinion here but at least when BC John, Kartik and Bill E Shears used to post even though they are Americans they gave repsectable, reasoned opinions. Michael is a total non-nothing wannabe wanker. Besides, with you having no more podcasts, this place is worthless to any fan. Speaking of your podcasts, why they suddenly stop, is michael taking that over as well, and his lack of contacts and knowledge of football but his love of Hockey and lecturing us how the NHL works is now the standard for EPL Talk?
