i haven't been to a soccer game outside of the us in about 10 years, but I have seen plenty of mlb, nhl, nba games here. and the most disturbing thing for me is the lack of true fans-the audience that comes to pro sports in america is more like a theatre audience than a sporting event audience. they come, eat brugers, chat, do everything, BUT watch and care deeply about the game and their team.
and, on some level, the commercialization of football/soccer is taking the game in that direction, too. but, again, the passion of football/soccer is still alive and i pray to god i never go to a big football/soccer game and i feel like i am in a theatre. i hope that never happens.
i rarely watch argentinian football on fsc, but the sight of estudiantes fans at the end of their game v. boca last week-crying, biting their finger-nails- was priceless-this is why football is the greatest game in the world. every now and then, i still watch on youtube the moments after the liverpool-chelsea game from the champions league from 2 years ago. words can't describe the feeling, even if one isn't a liverpool fan.
anyways.
On a different note: the "special one" should be fined for his arrogant and baseless claim that AJ dove on sunday. the more i watch the replay, the more i am convinced that boulharouz blatantly pushed AJ and this was a 100% penalty call. clear-cut penalty!!!
Anyways.
On the flip side, I went to 2 Championship derbies: Ipswich Town-Norwich City and Derby County-Leicester City and both matches were incredible. Both matches had a very heavy police presence at the train station and at the ground -- while walking to the Derby match, I didn't feel like I was in any danger of being attacked, but I still felt compelled to cover up my Leicester shirt until I got to the away end. The Ipswich match was probably the most heated sporting event I had ever been to -- incredible stuff.
Now you know why I don't bother going to the match on my frequent visits back to Blighty.
TT
you'd never walk alone there!
sorry i had to.
