I think the reason ESPN used the other guys is to get them over to the american audience since they will probably be the 2nd broadcast team behind Rae/Smyth for the European Championships this summer.

Because as the Gaffer said, today's alternative, Robbie Mustoe, was shockingly bad. He didn't bring anything to the table as far as analysis goes and from a color commentator, that's what you're looking for.

I missed Derek Rae, too. But Robbie Mustoe was pretty awful as a co-commentator. Many of his comments stated the obvious throughout the match.

Derek Rae I miss on the commentary but I will never miss Tommy 'bulge in the olde onion bag' Smyth. If ever a guy was hired by muppets just because he has an accent.
