Gotcha: Evidence That Sky Sports Hates Setanta

Started by The Gaffer · 8 months ago

Near the end of the Sky Sports news programme Through The Night, the hosts always flip through the back pages of the British daily newspapers to point out the headlines of what the morning papers are saying. • The purpose of the news programs on Sky Sports, Setanta, ESPN, etc, is to cross promote the events they are showing. ESPN is the worst at it. They talk endlessly about the NFL all year and ignore the sports they don't broadcast. They almost never mention hockey. They only mention football when they are broadcasting the sport. Even then, they don't promote the Thursday night MLS broadcast on SportsCenter.

I can understand Sky not wanting to promote Setanta's coverage, but I don't think that a few second flash of that advertising on the back page would make Sky lose subscribers. It's sad, and yes a little immature, that they think that will happen.
  • Maybe I'm living in dreamland, but when I watch a news program I expect it to be impartial. Sky and ESPN are very similar, I agree. But I tend to expect a fair and balanced broadcast - something I usually find on the BBC.

  • You say Sky completely ignore, or relegate coverage of, events they have no rights to, such as Euro 2008 and the Olympics. Not true. They had a dedicated reporter covering Euro 2008 along with a seperate reporter with Cristiano Ronaldo/Portugal. And they used many Sky News interviews on the Olympics which, I guess, made financial sense. Why send two teams of reporters to cover an event you have no pictures to? But it's false to say they ignore them completely.
  • While Euro 2008 was in full swing, the main story almost every night from Sky Sports was Cristiano Ronaldo which ended up being a non-story. Yes, there was a reporter in Euro 2008 but the coverage was pathetic. Sky could have done a much better job if they tried, but they couldn't care less.
